Our People

The UCT Student YMCA Christian Study Centre is led by a staff team that works closely with student leadership. Organisational oversight is provided by a board and the national YMCA.

Ministry Staff


Fritz van der Lecq

General Secretary

Fritz has been working at the Y since 2001 and leading it since 2007. He has BEcon and BTh degrees, and a Masters in Theology from Wheaton College, Illinois.


Dr Adrian Coates

Christian Thought

Adrian has served in Youth With A Mission for the last twenty-five years, in various capacities around the world, but always with a focus on educating and equipping Christians for living vocationally in the life of the world. Adrian holds an undergraduate degree in theology and philosophy, a Masters from Regent College in Canada, and a PhD in Religious Studies from UCT. Adrian is currently also a research fellow in theology with the University of the Free State.

Dr Jim Gieser


Jim joined the staff in late 2019 as head of operations. Jim has a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies and MA in Theology from Wheaton College, a MPhil in Higher Education Studies from UCT, and a Doctor of Education from Indiana University, specializing in Higher Education and Student Affairs.


Ntobeko Mjijwa

Community & Hospitality

Ntobeko has joined the staff in 2020 as community cultivator with a focus on men. Ntobeko has a fine arts degree from Nelson Mandela University and a Higher Certificate in Theology from George Whitefield College. He will be pursuing a Masters degree in fine arts in the near future.


Dr Jordan Pickering

Christian Thought

Jordan was a staff member of the Student YMCA between 2006 and 2008. Before rejoining the staff in 2019 he spent ten years lecturing biblical studies at a college in Cape Town. Jordan has a PhD in Old Testament from Stellenbosch.
